What UTMs answer — and what attribution answers later
UTMs are a labelling system. They tell you how the tagged click arrived when the parameters survive the path and land in the session correctly. Attribution is a credit-allocation system. It decides how that visit sits inside a larger journey, which touchpoint gets weighted, and how conversion reporting should be interpreted later.

The chain where UTMs stop and attribution begins

You choose the landing page and append values such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. This is a build step. If the values are wrong here, every report downstream inherits the same mistake.
Click arrival and redirect survival
The click still has to survive the real route. Shorteners, affiliate wrappers, app opens, deep links, and internal redirects can all change what finally lands. This layer answers whether the launched values reached the destination intact.

What UTMs can prove — and what they cannot
They can prove that the launched link carried a defined label and, when the route behaves, that a session arrived with the expected source, medium, and campaign values. They are excellent for grouping campaigns consistently, slicing traffic by controlled values, and checking whether a launch followed the agreed naming contract.
They cannot prove that the tagged click deserves all conversion credit, that no earlier touch mattered, or that every external platform must report the same journey identically. A valid label is not the same thing as a total customer-path verdict.
Why reports disagree even when the tagging is fine

Reading the wrong question
Sometimes the data is fine and the team is just asking a question the chosen report cannot answer cleanly. That is a reporting-choice issue, not a tag issue.
The safest order for real campaign analysis
When performance questions get heated, the team needs an agreed order of operations. Otherwise people jump straight to conversion credit before confirming that the launched visit behaved as expected.

A newsletter can label the visit cleanly without owning every later conversion
A link with stable values like utm_source=newsletter and utm_medium=email tells you the visit came from that send. It does not prove the email alone caused the sale if the user also interacted with paid search or direct visits later.

Auto-tagging elsewhere does not make manual UTMs fake
A Meta or TikTok campaign may use clean manual campaign values while another platform introduces its own identifiers. When the reports differ, the job is to understand the scope and rule, not to declare one source fake.

Link-in-bio and shorteners only help if the route stays intact
A creator may send users through a link hub before the final page. The manual tags still matter, but they only remain trustworthy if the redirect path preserves them.

A clean affiliate UTM can coexist with wider path complexity
An affiliate UTM may label the click correctly while the eventual sale is influenced by later traffic, coupon behaviour, or another device. That does not make the tag useless. It means the click label and the payout or conversion story are answering different questions.
- Read the affiliate layer and the analytics layer together.
- Do not force one field to do both jobs.
